Helping Kids Make and Keep Friends

Effective communication skills help children to form friendships at school and therefore build up their social skills. However communication skills are not the only social skills that adults can help children develop in preparation for starting school.
In order to make and maintain friendships children need to

  • Communicate
  • Share and take turns
  • Understand the boundaries of acceptable behaviour
  • Be kind
  • Understand how others are feeling
  • Start a conversation

All of these skills can be encouraged by

  • Playing with other children
  • Playing board games
  • Reading social stories and stories about friends
  • Using sand timers for sharing and taking turns
  • Watching films and discussing how characters are feeling
